Koska Mika on perinteisesti käynyt
Torstaina 26.5.2022 aamulla tapasimme Helsingin Länsisatamassa jossa kerhon porukka kokoontui.
valmistamaa maukasta Borssi keittoa.
VAG:n asiakas keskus Autostadt. Majoitus löytyi kävelymatkan päästä olevasta majatalosta.
Päivälle kertyi ajomatkaa 590 km.
Saksaan matkaa suunnittelevan kannattaa huomioida että maanantaisin useat ravintolat ovat kiinni, no löysimme kuitenkin ruokapaikan läheltä majapaikkaamme.
Tiistaina emme sitten ajaneet metriäkään moottoripyörillä, kävelimme kylläkin reilusti ja minä ajoin ½ tuntia sähköautolla, kun sellaisen testaamisen mahdollisuus sisältyi pääsylipun hintaan. Mikaa en ratin taakse saanut houkuteltua 😎. Pääasiassa tutustuimme VAG:n eri brändien paviljonkeihin ja opastetulla kierroksella keskuksen toimintaan. Illalla istuimmekin majatalon terassilla haastellen maailman menosta paikan omistajan kanssaEnsi tutustuminen täyssähkö autoon |

Matka jatkui Saksan moottoriteitä pitkin
Hannoverin ohi Ruhrin alueen läpi Hollantiin Venlon kaupunkiin.
Seisoviin ruuhkiinkin jouduimme pariin otteeseen joten
splittaus taitoja tarvittiin taas.

Lauantain aloitimme ajamalla vanhalle telakka alueelle jossa
amiraali Horatio Nelsonin lippulaiva Trafalgarin taistelussa 1805. Pakko todeta
että ihmisten keskipituus on kasvanut reilusti 200 vuodessa. Kiitokset pysäköintilaitoksen hoitajalle, saimme parkin yhden hinnalla kun molemmat pyörät mahtuivat yhteen parkkiruutuun. Portsmouthista

keskustaan jossa ruokailimme laiva ravintolassa runsaan usean annoksen thai
aterian.

Maanantaina jatkoimme Lontoon laitoja kiertäen Doveriin
lauttasatamaan. Tällä kertaa jouduimme jonottamaan lippujen tarkastus jonossa
katsomaan kuuluisia kalkkikivi kallioita.
Ajomatkaa
kertyi 265 km

Tiistaina aloitimme loppukirin kohti kotia, ensin Bremeniin 628
km, sitten keskiviikkona Tanskan läpi Ruotsiin jossa olimme yötä Helsinborgissa
669 km ajon jälkeen ja torstaina Tukholmaan 559 km. Satamassa pieni sadekuuro
Viking Gloryyn pääsyä odotellessa, muuten oli aurinkoista. Laivalla seurasimme

jatkoimme kumpikin omaan suuntaamme.
24 päivän reissu jossa minulle
kertyi 8134 km.
Jaska
Summer 2019 we made a ride by 3 motorbikes around Balkan peninsula and then arose idea to go to Ireland before Brexit as rumors were that it will be really difficult to go to England after that. But then came COVID19 epidemic and all borders were closed so in years 2020 and 2021 during short border openings Mika and I rode only in Finnish Lapland and northern Norway.
Winter 2022 we finally decided to go to Ireland as limitations of COVID19 seemed to be passed and reality of Brexit was not that bad as expected. So we started to update our road plan.
According to our original itinerary we would ride to Sweden, Denmark and via Germany to France, then across channel to Britain and Ireland. Then trough Northern-Ireland to Scotland and back to southern England as there are no more car ferries from England to Norway and Denmark, the only reasonable way is to cross channel to France or Netherlands. Then back to Finland via Poland and Baltic countries.
More than 7500 km = 4660 miles in three weeks

As things never go as planned our group decreased so finally only Mika and I started the ride and as Mika has a tradition to go to Estonia with his motorcycle club we changed the route the other way around so that we started our ride from Helsinki and joined motorcycle club tour to Estonia. So I had the pleasure to visit Saaremaa island for first time.
On Thursday May 26th 2022 we met at Helsinki harbor were participants of the club gathered. After waiting a while in a mild rainy morning we got in the fully booked ferry, parked and bind up our bikes, now the voyage has really started.
3 pictures of ferry trip from Helsinki to Tallinn
From sunny port of Tallinn we started to ride towards city of Kuresaare at island of Saaremaa. At Kuresaare we had accommodation in SPA Hotel Asa and right at reception the current reality of world was clear. The hotel was mainly used to accommodate Ukrainian refugees, mainly women and children, some older men also. Some were probably working but most of them spending time discussing and following news from cellphones and children playing around. Ukrainian flags we saw later almost every day even though we did not meet refugees in hotels that we used.
Friday we rode around the island with our group and visited Kaali Meteorite museum We also had tasty Bors soup lunch at the museum 2nd floor restaurant served and cooked by Ukrainian ladies working there.
Saturday morning it was time to say goodbye to motorcyclist and we started to ride to south to Lithuania where our target for the day was city of Kaunas. We managed well to evade rain on the road, just a small shower after arriving to city center and parking bikes to hotel back yard after 584 km/363 miles ride. After rain we walked to Laisvės alėja Boulevard of freedom and found a nice place for dinner.
Picture of Laisvės alėja
Sunday we continued to south via Suwalki corridor to Poland. On the way i had on my mind war in Europe and possible influences to this narrow and only connection between Poland and Baltic countries.
Picture of a small road in Poland
In Poland we turned to west riding through old West Prussia area, some roads were smaller but nice. We headed to city of Bydgoszcz ( impossible for me to pronounce correctly) had accommodation in a city center hotel after riding 556 km/345 miles. Not so easy to find the right way to hotel parking area but after a couple of U- turns we made it. Close to hotel we found a nice German type restaurant, heavy food and good beer.
2 pictures from Bydgoszcz
Monday morning monotonous highway to Germany and part of it was even a toll road.
During last over 10 years that I'we been riding around Europe with Mika and sometimes with a bigger group we have visited quite many auto and technical museums in several European countries. This time our target was VAG group visitor center Autostadt in Wolfsburg Germany. I had booked a room for 2 nights from a guesthouse close enough to walk. Days driving was 590 km/367 miles.
When planning trip to Germany it's good to keep in mind that some restaurants are closed on Mondays, well we found a nice place for dinner close to our guesthouse as it's restaurant was closed 😎
Tuesday we did not even touch our bikes but walked a lot and I rode half an hour by an electric car as the possibility of testing it was included in entry ticket. Even though i tried to lure Mika to test it, he as a declared petrol head denied 😁 Mainly we spend the day to get to know different pavilions of VAG brands and on a guided tour how the center works. In the evening we spent a while on the terrace of the guest house talking with the owner.

Wednesday morning quick checking of bikes and filling Suzuki's Scottoiler chain oiling system, something that these cardan drive shaft guys do always rug. Anyway my first chains lasted over 60.000 km/ 37300 miles.
We continue riding through Germany using Autobahn highways passing Hannover and Ruhr area to Netherland city of Venlo. Even though maximum speed is not limited on some parts of German highways there were so much heavy traffic that no change to ride much over 100 km/h / 70miles/h. Also we got a couple time to standing traffic jams so splitting skills were needed again. 438 km / 272 miles for the day.
At Venlo we had accommodation in Hotel American and just in front of the hotel was the starting point of graduating students school end parade that we followed. We have seen similar parade years ago in Sweden Karlskrona but as I know this is not a tradition anywhere in Finland.
Picture of students parade and bikes in front of the hotel morning sun
Sunny Thursday morning we continued to ride Belgia and close to English channel coast to city of Calais in France. On the way we stopped at Dunkirk to see the cost where British evacuated their troops from May 26th to June 4th 1940 as German troops were conquering France. Dunkirk beach
Picture of Dunkirk beach
We also visited in 1890 built Fort des Dunes that had role in both World Wars I and II
Picture of Fort des Dunes entrance
To get day full of war history we rode also to south side of Calais Mimoyecques to see caves that Germans mined using slave workers. Hitler's idea was to use V3 cannons for firing London but allied air forces managed to ruin most of the caves so that none of the cannons was never in operative function.

In the evening we had just by chance the same hotel as 2018 when we riding at the coast of Normandy
For Friday we had bought in advance tickets for train under the English channel and we rode to terminal early in the morning. Large practically empty waiting area with a lot of turns before we reached French customs point. Even here the Russians attack to Ukraine was visible.
In French customs we had to wait some minutes of results of drug sniff tests before we entered the British custom point. The British officer was mainly interested of meeting Finns and we had a short discussion where we have been on our bike rides during years.
2 pictures of Eurotunnel terminal area and picture of train cabin
In train we got " a private wagon"at the end of the train, don't know why they did not take us into the same wagon as few cars of the same train. Riding Eurotunnel went smooth and after a bit more than half an hour we were in Folkestone England. There we had to ride through the whole train before we got out in sunny England. Then a quick stop at gas station for snacks and we were riding on left side of the road, no more Brexit in entering the country.
We rode using the roads closest to cost throw Brighton to Portsmouth that was the target for the day. After 196 km/ 121 miles we had the most expensive accommodation of the whole ride at the northern side of city. I must say that the price/quality ratio was also the worst. Maybe it was because of the weekend and that after COVID19 people had increased their travelling so that reasonable price hotels in Portsmouth were not free.
Saturday morning we rode to old Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, parked our bikes to near by parking house and visited first HMS Warrior and after that HMS Victory that was flagship of Admiral Horatio Nelson on 21 October 1805. I must note that average height of people is much more than 200 years ago 😀. After visiting Historic Dockyard we walked back to get our bikes, thanks to the parking supervisor we got our bikes parked by one fee as they were in one parking square. We rode to Stohenge, also busy there due to weekend and continued to Wales village of Porth. Really nice small roads and scenery's, 293 km / 182 miles for the day.

Sunday after typical English breakfast we rode in typical British drizzle to coast city of Fishguard and by a ferry over St.George channel to Ireland without and customs procedures, forwarded to a country hotel near by city of Mallow. Days riding 354 km / 220 miles. At the hotel just got a feeling of turning time back time 50 years, a great experience.

Monday we continue to west to city of Dingle and forward to western point Ireland main island riding Slea Head driveway and after tour returned to city. We had accommodation in a guest house and after that walked to center of Dingle that is to my understanding one of the most popular tourist cities in Ireland, anyway now it was not really crowded. Today we rode 170 km / 105 miles.

Thursday we continued riding towards home passing Dublin where we in original idea planned to spend one day but rode directly to Belfast. Crossing the border was practically visible only by navigator showing the speed limits again by not even numbers as in continet but miles modified to kilometers. After riding 220 km / 137 miles we reached a B&B house, parked our bikes in backyard behind a high fence and walked to city center. Old disagreements were still visible as usage of barbed wire fences and altogether I got quite untidy impression of the city. Paying with credit card was impossible in pub so we had to make paying at grocery store cash desk located in same building, really a strange arrangement but it worked 😎

Friday morning we rode to ferry port and then by ferry over Irish Sea to Scotland to port of Cairnryan and continued via Glasgow to city of Helensburg. In Glasgow the Garmin navigator guided us really peculiarly from highway M77 to M8 through city center traffic jams that was not so nice in a rainy weather. Afterwards looking from map that was far away of being the fastest route but it's so easy to be hindsight. At Helensburg we ha reservation in a hotel that was managed by a gentleman wearing turban and unlike our usual ways we ordered a taxi to center to eat. Maybe the rain has something to do with that. Today we rode 169 km / 105 miles.

Saturday morning was rainy and we got on the road rain and wind just intensified. 4 hours riding in rain and heavy side wind without stopping so we missed Three Sisters Wiewpoint until at Loch Ness Exhbition Center sun was shining again. It's a pity as this section would have had the best scenery of the whole trip, so no photos. Adjusting of clothing and tour in souvenir shops before continuing of ride, by the way here we met only Finns on west side of English Channel during our ride. At the coast of Loch Ness we stopped to see the place where Mika and Peter Ruotsalo stopped for swimming as they were here years ago while riding on a Peterpan Bike tour. Water was chilly that time so we did not test it now. We continued to Inverness and turned to south to city of Perth. Luckily the rest of the day no rain, today we rode 431 km / 268 miles.

Monday we continued riding around London to Dover ferry port. This time we had to wait in a short queue a biker in front of us had not purchased tickets by forehand so it took a while. No problem as we have arrived in good time. Then we waited the ferry to come with several other bikers, rode to ferry, tied our bikes and seated in cafe to see White cliffs of Dover. Quite busy ship traffic in channel, but not to busy. At Dover we had a room in a hotel just near the port and at the terrace we spent the evening with some British and German bikers. Today we rode 265 km / 165 miles.

Tuesday we started last leg to home, first Bremen 628 km / 390 miles, on Wednesday through Denmark to Sweden city of Helsingborg 669 km / 416 miles and on Thursday to Stockholm 559 km / 347 miles. At harbor we had a small rain shower while waiting access to ship Viking Glory, otherwise it was sunny all the way. On the ship we watched throw glass floor how ship was refueled using LNG gas, then had a good dinner and walked around the almost brand new ship, visited tax-free shop where I bought a small bottle of Tullamore DEW whisky to take home. It was even cheaper as at the shop of the distillery.

Friday morning arrival to Finland city of Turku and riding to nearby commune of Lieto where we had morning coffee at Neste cafeteria, then we said good bye and rode both to our own directions.
We rode 24 days and totally I got 8134 km / 5055 miles to my bike.
The original idea was to spend some more days and ride more on small roads but anyway a great ride once again.
And sure there is life even after Brexit 😉
Now we have been practically in every European countries by our own bikes, so what next? Maybe not this long ride but lets see... some ideas we have already been thinking about.
To be continued on someday
